whip training is fine, they don't actually hit the pokemon with it. Think lion tamers and their use of whips.

Whip training was a thing of its time. Of course as we progress as a society we start seeing how primitive and destructive older behaviors were. Abuse is abuse, the games reflected this as times moved on we stopped seeing these actions.

It reflects an image of the world that they moved away from pretty early in the franchise's history, and shouldn't be mourned for too much because it's not like something was lost in cutting it. They didn't really know what they were doing at the time or what Pokemon was yet. No use being an angry autist over it.

Started with gen 1. Whip training is problematic for the intended messaging and tone of the series IMO, but I don't mind them being around necessarily. The aesthetic is cool, and part of me wishes we wound up with the beta Red as this shady-looking, whip-wielding punk.

It would make sense to have equipment to protect yourself from wild Pokemon other than just Pokemon, but it isn't shown like that. Captured Pokemon follow your commands unless received in a trade regardless of how you raise them, so it doesn't seem to make sense as a punishment tool. Generally it doesn't feel like it meshes with the game mechanics, which is why only a few enemy trainers have whips, half of which are bad guys.

The whip thing is was already pretty dead when the games first came out, there's no real reference to it in the game or in any material released at the time, at least in the US. Definitely just a relic.

In my headcanon, whip training was more a technique of old timey Pokemon trainers. As societal values & Pokemon Rights progressed, whipping a Pokemon was most likely seen as a form of abuse than legitimate training. Many protests, studies, PSAs & alternate method discussions later, it was more or less phased out. The trainers we see with whips in Gen 1 are likely the last holdouts of a dying method.

Of course, it's possible that a lot of trainers don't PHYSICALLY whip their Pokemon, we see AJ in the anime just use it for noise making when training his Sandshrew.

Whip training is based. Gives way way to a little realism in the Pokemon world. Certain species of Pokemon are too ferocious/prone to violence/hard to control and need to be broken in. The Pokemon league should have no qualms about this as the more ferocious and violent Pokemon help big-time matches get, more views and revenue.
