Onix being utter shit was one of the biggest let downs of my childhood, being slightly faster than you would expect for a rock type isn't a good trade off for dealing no damage and having zero health

It makes sense it would lose Rock Typing for logical reasons. It wouldn't be losing Ground because Steelix is still a subterranean species. Considering GF is very very fanpander-y these days, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Rock/Ice Crystal Onix split evolution.

At least Mega Steelix brings back its Rock type roots with Sand Force, the geode patterns and the crystals breaking out of its armor
