Thread name, I've seen various divided opinions, i myself dont like gen 5 but I've never played it because I'm too busy on the newer games (specially playing with Charizard and Pikachu on gen 8) and watching all the cutscenes in USUM

Explain why it's bad or why it's good

Yes. If you were planning on playing a good Gen 5 game then just play Gen 4. You'd think Gen 5 being in the same system as the previous gen would improve upon everything from Gen 4, but nope.

It's polarizing. You had to use completely new Pokemon until you beat the Elite 4. There's less postgame compared to Plat and HGSS. While it had the best story in the series, it also started the series trend of focusing more on story, and the stories that came after it have mostly been misses. People complain that Unova is linear, but I think the route designs are great and there are lots of off the beaten path places to explore too. It also prevents the level curve from getting fucked like in gens 2 and 4. I love BW but I can see why not everyone does.

Gen 6 is a slight downgrade to 5, I like the 3D graphics and the Megas. Difficulty is barely a thing compared to BW.

Gym leaders and Elite Four have terrible teams, storyline makes no sense, the XP share is too overpowered.
I will however give it to them for making animations for the moves instead of robotic dancing.
While BW isn't as difficult as its remakes, it is still difficult.
