Since Dawn is appearing so early (in July), do you think it's possible she can be a recurring character of sorts in later Sinnoh appearances?

Remakes come out in November, and then Arceus in January 2022...so she's appearing quite a few months early...and then not appearing when her games are actually out would be odd.

Not just this thread, the wider internet in general. Dawn and Serena are people widely known outside the fandom, Dawn as a characters from the last series a lot of millennials/early zoomers watched when they were kids, and Serena if only because she kissed Ash.
Personally I think that Dawn will be a "wider" hype level, bringing in lots of people who don't watch the anime regularly, while Serena will absolutely annihilate the dedicated fanbase and there will be utter spergery and shitposting EVERYWHERE the anime is discussed on the internet for AT LEAST a year

People forget that Misty's departure was an experiment at first, back in 2002 they had no idea if bringing in a new female lead would be successful. The writers only made Misty's departure permanent when they saw how quickly May became popular, and that's also why Misty's cameos originally stopped as soon as Hoenn ended.

After that, well the animes ratings declined every series so less people were watching, so everyone from BW/XY, etc. onward doesn't have a fraction of the viewership May had.

She's not less popular than Misty/Serena worldwide. Maybe Dawn, and that's mostly in Japan. Outside of the casual/nostalgic crowd in the west, Misty's fanbase doesn't translate to the overall 20 years of the show since most of them dropped the show in Johto. Nobody is going to downplay May as long as I am around. AG also pre-dated pixiv (it didn't start till 2007 after AG ended), and most old AG fansites or May/Ash, and May/Drew geocities sites in the early 2000's died.

From 12 - 2 PM, they stop for some variety show, then come back at 5-6:30 PM .

The first slot is for kids who either sre goin to or coming back from school (Brazilian kids got to school at 7:15 AM and come back home at 11:15, it's the perfect time for lunch and they watch). Then kids who go to school in the afternoon still catch the first episodes (from 12-13PM, and when they come back they can still watch the rest from 5-6 PM).

I remember we had a character poll during the XY era, therefore before SM and before Misty had a cameo in about 12 years...she was much lower.

SM boosted her popularity due to her new design, kids seeing her the first time, after being in obscurity since AG

A lot of Misty fans are like people who only like the original 151 pokemon. They just watched Kanto/Orange and a little bit of Johto and dropped the series. Those are the casual fans who haven't kept up with the franchise.

Obviously the whole fad era of Pokemon needs to be separated from the rest of the series.

For Misty it's a combination of both. There's no doubt in my mind May was more popular than Misty when AG was airing, this is the reason the writers decided not to bring Misty back after all, but her fans have long lasting support for her since most of them don't keep up with the show.

Younger fans do prefer Dawn, Serena or to a lesser extent Lillie, and that's why they're higher than Misty on that poll for the same reason.

Not with people watching, look through the archives of forums and sites from 2002-2006, from what hasn't been deleted. May was the most popular character in the series as a companion at the time.

Not true, most like May because of her personality and design. The shipping aspect is mostly with female fans, obviously a lot of guys don't care for Contestshipping much.

It depends, if you count millions of more viewers than later companions, obviously out of that sample size she has to have a large fanbase. Now obviously not everyone who watched AG liked her (I'm sure some Misty fans rage-watched May when it was airing), but I'm sure it's a low number out of literally millions of people.

Besides that May's character, story, Contests, rivals, were all well received/popularity, especially over stuff like Serena's showcases or what Misty was in Johto. So that boosts her popularity as well.
