Did anyone else play Gen 4 and almost fall out of the series? I've seen other people have this experience and I want to ask /vp/ as well.

When Platinum came out it pretty much killed my entire interest in the series until XY came out. Platinum is one of the most boring games I ever played.

I didn't lose interest but I played comparatively little. I used to play the shit out of gen 2 and 3; I did one file for pearl and all I remember was a boring, tedious blur.

I remember catching Dialga, trading it to my younger brother who used it to steamroll Pearl, then he traded it back to me and it was level 70 so I used it to steamroll my game. That's probably why I didn't get into Gen V is because I took all the fun out of the main campaign and couldn't into online/competitive (also didn't have any friends who played Pokémon)

Actually I'm replaying all the gens. Right now playing Heart Gold and enjoying it, but I almost dropped Platinum because it's slow as fuck. Distortion world and such is cool though. For some reason I can't remember anything from BW/BW2 despite playing them a couple of times when these were released, maybe that's a signal.

For me it's the generation with one of the worst dex I was troubled has kid to choose a Team of 6 without older mon and I was really happy that Honchkrow was a Diamond exclusive. Now I think it's even harder.
The game is also really slow, even outside the battle and Barry is one of the rival I hate the most.

I can understand why people like it but for me it was a bad experience and I have the same problems with SWSH

This. Tbh I could never see them beating gen 5 as the greatest generation since I knew they were gonna go in a different direction in the next games and they didn't look appealing to me. I probably will never get back into Pokemon, at least not through playing any gen after 5.

Apparently speed and lack of innovation is people's main gripes with it according to the thread? Honestly mine too. I don't know why it made me want to quit pokemon though. I played BW2 and then Pearl and Pearl just felt very...old? I mean it's obviously older but it felt very archaic. Which is strange since I'm honestly fond of the older titles.

I know people like to shit on it by saying nobody cares, but I was a teen when I played Platinum and was already feeling tired of the pisseasy baby campaign. Cue the absolute bullshit that is beating all the frontier brains. I loved it. I sunk so many hours trying out different teams and strats. and to this day, the random challenge is still my favorite out of anything the mainline games have done.

I wouldn't complain about newer games as much if they acknowledged the try-hards like me a bit more. Gimme a new Stadium or something. The battle system has so much depth and yet it is wasted on single player's braindead AI. Anyways, Platinum is only worth it in my mind for the Battle Frontier.

That was my experience. I played gen 4 and after that I had little to no interest in pokemon anymore. Gen V was fantastic though, but now Sun and Moon feel the same as 4. Hell, Gen 8 is the first Gen I didn't buy, just borrowed a friend's game.

I do wonder though if it had more to do with my age. Gen 1 came out and I was definitely in the prime demographic for those so the series swept me up in hype, maybe by Gen 4 I was losing interest anyways

i skipped gen 4 as a kid because i didn't own a ds at the time, so i hold no nostalgia for it. i do find its the generation i come back to the least when i want to replay a pokemon game, and i find the "burnout" hits much earlier in sinnoh games than in others. love the region itself, though, and it introduced a bunch of staple features that improved the series a ton.

I had a copy of Black 2 that I liked playing but never got to finish. So I ended up selling it.
Minor regret but I was never going to finish it anyways.
I haven't played a game since Gen 5. XY looks like it has more content than Gen 5 but saturated with a boring plot and Pokémon served on a silver platter.
I might have bought Pokémon sun but Eh.

No. I played Pearl after I played HG and Black and absolutely loved it because I was a huge lorefag at the time and the Sinnoh region has comparatively a lot going for it in terms of implied lore.
I continued to enjoy Black 2 and then Y, found OR a chore to finish, and nearly quit the franchise with Sun. Sun is the only mainline game I didn't finish and didn't buy the sequel to.

Yes. Gen I and II both came out relatively close to each other. Gen III is still the "new" pokemon gen in my mind, and by then some of my older cousins and such were beginning to tease about not having grown out of the series

I played DP and that's when I stopped caring and dropped the series for years to play other stuff instead. The anime dub also replaced nearly all the original VAs so I think that also played a part in it. Afterwards when Gen V came out I had already checked out and only occasionally saw memes about "the garbage pokemon" and things like that.

I regret it because HGSS and Gen V are my personal favorites in the series.

I'm playing Platinum for the first time just now and yeah, I'm not enjoying it much. Lots of things about it just seem lazy:

I think vast majority of people only play two or three gens before getting bored. As someone who started with gen 1 and stopped with gen 4 . There's a whole lot I didn't like about gen 4 but I still enjoyed and I never even considered buying HgSS, which I think says more about my age than the quality of the games.

People complain about this in Unova (rightfully so, mind you) but Platinum is honestly godawful with this too; half the Gym Leaders are fucking around somewhere else, and if it's not a Gym Leader hide-and-seek game, it's Team Galactic fucking around preventing you from progressing.
