That makes no sense. In Gen 8, Raihan loses to Melony yet he's still boasted to be strong enough to be champion of another region and is Leon's rival. A loss doesn't mean you can't succeed in other ways. Besides, you also had the anime where Ash loses to Gary and then beats him down the road.
