We can generalize a few types about how Pokémon act. An Electric Pokémon are fast and fragile so an Electric specialist trainer will focus on speed, a Fighting Type in pure strength, Dark on trickery and guile, etc. Could we expand this to every type and compare/contrast?

That's a given.
I feel like there's some overlap with sneaky Dark type battling versus Ghost Type battling. If you could flavor a Dark type and a Ghost type expert, how would you differentiate?

Not the anon you replied to but Ghosts have the added ability of being able to to be invisible and move through objects.

Dark types would have more under-handed strategies like throwing sand, or using a poison jab last minute.

I tend to categorize Fire, Fighting and Dragon as super aggressive, but I don't think they'd be identical?

dark type is more "dirty". a punk rocker, a criminal, or something sneaky like a ninja. ghost focuses more on either being spooky or being mysterious/mystical.

Well since the series has began there's been this "ooo Dragon types are REALLY hard to train!" thing. You have to be sUpEr SpEcIaL to have a Dragon type partner and all that. Dragon-types are loud, angry, unruly, and all-around destructive with I guess the exception of Alolan Exeggutor. So a Dragon-type trainer is always some legendary big epic tough guy, or Drasna/Clair who have them from some family tradition reason?
But the same idea doesn't seem to apply to Ghost-types, despite them having a similarly extraordinary typing. They're just given to quiet, crazy or devout people. There's always the point that Ghost-types don't have to eat, and maybe that makes up for a lot of the disparity between those to raise Ghost-types and those who raise Dragon-types.

Bug types are communists/collectivists
Steel types are type-A people and/or stoic

This isn't true for more powerful Bug-types, of course. Good luck coming across a Larvesta in the wild, and things like Scizor and Golisopod require much more investment than your average Bug. A truly threatening Bug-type trainer will have to become familiar with a wide variety of type matchups and evolution methods.
>Likewise, many Normal-type Pokémon are straightforward in their training/living needs, evolution methods, and even battle strategy, making them a common pick for more casual Trainers.
Obviously, Normal-type also span a much greater range than this description, with plenty of exceptions to the rule including Ditto, Eevee, Aipom, Lickitung, Type:Null and the Porygon line. Normal-types boast access to pretty much every type of strategy and every type of attack, making those who train them just as unpredictable.

One thing I like is the way Ice seems to be represented. Sure there are the cool and collected trainers like you would expect but a lot of the Ice masters have really fiery spirits fit to handle the cold.

This may be true for the ingame leaders and such, but a lot of these canon trainers don't really "master" their type. A true type specialist would consider their team's type matchups over all, as obviously if you stick to one type of Pokémon you're going to have a persistent and glaring weakness. Many of the "specialist" trainers in the games seem to have zero awareness of that concept and display absolutely no counter-strategy vs their weaknesses. I can remember maybe one Electric gym leader who has one Pokémon with an Air Balloon?

What makes them distinct from rock types besides being better? I imagine they're both tough, sturdy and focus on defenses and tanking hits in battle and generally stubborn personality. What's something that rock can do that steel doesn't?

I like to imagine Normal type trainers are really into versatility and adaptability. They can be almost as brutal as fighting types or as fast as electric types but they're "easier" to take care off.

To be fair, this is a common case of "lore =/= in practice". Red's theme isn't meta at all but he's basically considered one of the best trainers period. I'd imagine an anon with a meta team from OU pushed into a real life Pokémon battle wouldn't actually do as well as the numbers would say.
This thread is all just headcanon and speculation anyways

Also rock types are usually more rugged and wild while steel is more "refined" in a sense
rocks are more out in the wild, while steels are usually in places where humans are, like aggron in mines and magnemite in factories

I could see steel specialists try to focus on the defensive strength with stuff like body press while rock specialists use their mons' natural sturdiness to survive some more reckless tactics

Rock is solid but soft enough to show imprints of the past, fossils are thanks to Rock and would be impossible with only Steel. Steel is manmade. Rock is wild, stoic earth; Steel is rigid and calculated, while Rock reshapes over time, one with nature.
