USUM's difficulty mainly comes from the totems and Necrozma. Though the trainer battles are still very solid, especially since many of them use EVs. Up there with Emerald and Platinum I would say.

it's definitely in the top three, but you also have a lot more power at your disposal with buffed x items, z moves, and infinite TMs. i'd probably pick platinum as the ardest mainline game.

Literally only Ultra Necrozma, who's the closest they've ever come to a proper boss fight against a sole, extra powerful foe.
The only problem is it doesn't work for Pokemon because it's 1v1 and GameFreak is allergic to making you do double battles in the campaign that aren't once ever or a tag team battle, something other RPGs don't suffer from because they have actual multiple active party members.

I think difficulty comparisons need 2 categories because of this. Tuere's games that are intentionally hard by having strong trainers, and games that are unintentionally hard by holding back the player. USUM are the most intentionally difficult games, Platinum is the most unintentionally difficult.
