Gen 3-6 for varying degrees.

3 did the original dex cut which is even worse than the one we have now.

4 was slow as shit and bloated to hell and back

I shouldn't need to explain why gens 5 and 6 are bad other than that they're unanimously the dark age

Luckily Gen 7 revived Pokemania but even better with GO, so you're welcome for that. Not to mention Swoosh boosted sales to monumental levels and is on track to become the best selling games, probably aside BDSP. The only thing that could possibly end Pokemania now is if Legends doesn't flop and they start making more BOTW/GO clone garbage.

Pokemon was a gateway into other RPGs which led people elsewhere. Given that JRPGs were in their renaissance period at the time, there was plenty to draw the eyes away.

Gen 4 was my first. I played Diamond in 2007. Literally did not notice how slow it was until I came to /vp/.

This right here. it was definitely gen 3 that killed the hype train. I even really like gen3 as a whole. But with misty and seemingly Brock leaving the anime a lot of kids stopped watching. Not to mention at this point kids were becoming "to cool to watch pokemon." Those of us who stuck with it had to play in secret for fear of being ridiculed.

For me, it was black city, npcs looked awful just for a cheap gimmick location

Nothing ended Pokémania. Not GS nor Crystal, not RS. It simply faded out because Pokémania was a fad and all fads wither with time regardless of the type or quality of output. There wasn't anything the Gen 2 or Gen 3 games could have done to preserve Pokémania. It would have died even if both of those games were as good as they possibly could be, which GS even were considered as at the time.

Anyone who tries to blame any particular game or generation in the series for "killing Pokémania" is just trying to start shit.

It's an obvious shitpost, they're talking about gen VII and Go as being "even better", it's blatant bait.

That said, did you not at least notice how long saving took in gen IV? That's what always got me. I tolerated it, I've dealt with worse playing a lot of other JRPGs, but it sure was noticeable.
