If you get unlucky the random A.I. might pick the appropriate move once or twice in a row. But its random and that sucks. It must have been an oversight or something for original DP. Afaik every game before and after (including Platinum) had at least some form of slightly advanced A.I. for important trainers where they use a super effective move if they have it. I was incredibly disillusioned when I played diamond earlier this year.
I used this team. I was petrified of her garchomp because 5 of my team members were weak to earthquake and I was underleveled. I didn't know how the fuck I would get past it. Well I killed the spiritomb, nothing too special just spam strong stab and it will fold eventually, I killed it with skuntank. Then the beast came out. It finished off my weakened skunk with brick break. I wasnt sure what to do, I figured my best bet was to try to somehow tank an EQ from chomp and kill it with ice beam. Garchomp went first and used... Giga impact. It had two different attacks that were supereffective, one of which with stab would almost definitely ohko. I was confused. It only did about a third of empoleons health. I fired an ice beam, still in awe of what just happened. It didnt quite kill but the forced recharge made it immobile and didn't allow cynthia to use a full restore. I dont remember how most of the rest of the battle went, but my steelix was my last remaining Mon. She sent out milotic. I had my fingers hovered over the soft reset buttons (I saved in front of her out of fear) ready to try again.
