The starters aren't even that good in gen 1. Venusaur is outclassed by Exeggutor and Victreebel while both Charizard and Blastoise are hot garbage.

Bulbasaur doesn't make the game that easy. He gets walled by all of the poison mons used by team rocket and gets murderfucked by any psychic type.
