Crystal was the worst selling mainline game in history. Literally 90% of the merch was for Gen 1 Pokemon, but you as a fetus then wouldn't have been able to tell. Kids got thoroughly bored of Pokemon upon Crystal's arrival, and moved on to other interests. The Johto anime was such a drain that viewership dropped by over 50% during the Johto arc. Real Pokemania was RBY, with by far the most successful third version. Gen 2 rode the wave and thoroughly ended it with Crystal. I know Gen 2 is your wasted childhoods that you retards would probably defend to the grave despite it being a piece of shit, but it was the definition of a quick cash grab on a fad. Gen 2 needed Kanto because it couldn't stand on its own. Gen 2 went with "quantity over quality" to make a profit on the hype, which quickly resulted in ending the early craze. If you want to talk about any gen that could "stand its own", Gen 2 is the worst example to use.
