You can get Remoraid by Sunnyshore iirc so I get the feeling he just grabbed something in the immediate area while he was bored and was allowed to use it in Gym Battles because it was close to the local habitat or something.
He says he was bored, so he might have been using shitmons to challenge himself, and he still wound up beating people, so he was about to say fuck it.
