Yeah, beta GSC was all of Japan and Kanto was one big town. Games like Zelda and Dragon Quest also have games that condense a previous region's map into one location

I know Zelda 2 put all of Zelda 1's map on it somewhere but are there other examples of this in Zelda? And what DQ examples do you know of?

BotW has two odd examples. Part of the plateau you start on has Hyrule Castle Town and the Temple of Time, but also has the main temple from Skyward Sword is in some crevice and is full of Guardians for whatever reason. The sequel only raises more questions, or I guess raising Hyrule Castle itself is what raises the questions.

It's mindblowing seeing how small one location was in comparison to where you are in another game. Lesser Hyrule got that nickname for a damn reason, holy shit. One could imagine Kanto in Gen 2 had these plans stuck.

Apart from what DQ2 did, as other anon mentioned, a similar thing happens in DQ3, where after beating the "final" boss it comes back and drops you into another world, which is Alefgard, the world from DQ1, where you have to continue your adventure.
