I think Gen IV is highly overrated. They're far from bad games, but the slow gameplay and boring areas make it less fun than any other game in the first 5 generations. The biggest argument I see for it is "content," when Gen V has just as much to do and is less of a slog to actually play. I think people who say Gen IV is flat-out garbage are exaggerating, but I think most people who praise it as the peak of the series probably started with it and their judgment is being clouded by nostalgia. Gen II and III are more simple and clean and have better replayability, and Gen V has everything good from Gen IV plus better music and smoother gameplay.
