They're all painfully average.
Gen 5 is one of my two favorite gens but the starters will always be one of the lamest aspects about Unova. I'll box them as soon as I catch a Lillipup, or I'll hack in a Vanillite or something.

As for Emboar being outclassed, I agree it should be buffed. I'm just not sure how. Emboar is pretty much just a shittier Darmanitan, right now, so it needs things that can set it apart from Darm

Evolution lines had weird design choices like Tepigs line going Pig -> Wrestler -> Fatass and Oshawott going biped w/ weapon -> bigger biped with weapon -> mustache sea lion quadruped

The second reason is Gen V had massive powercreep in general. You could use a well rounded starter or you could catch a Drillbur and lilipup and unga bunga 90% of the game.

Emboar could've been mono fire. Or they could've made all three part fighting type though they'd need to edit serperiors moveset a bit. Grass/Dragon, Fire/Ground, and Water/Fighting works too

Unova's earlygame selection in general has some of the weakest designs in the series, but luckily the rest of the dex compensates pretty well.

You mean competitive, right? Because if you're talking about the main campaign, then idk what you guys are on about. I played the game 3x with all three starters and they fair just fine. You should be able to make the pokemon work in single player regardless.
