Every gym leader should've had their own unique fan club and the story could've implemented some commentary and insight into the (toxic) fan culture of pokemon battling. The whole Galar region heavily emphasizes their strong trainers and pokemon battling being a pretty strong part of their national identity, so it would've made sense that the story would revolve around the (fan) culture surrounding pokemon battling: how it affects pokemon, trainers, champions, gym leaders, fans and bystanders.

They can't even give us more than a single chapter of story revolving around anything besides starting a journey to become the champion through battling and incidentally thwarting an evil organization in the process despite adding mechanics for several other career options and the setting offering potential for thousands of stories that aren't that. How would they ever manage putting that much world building and character development into a single 20 hour campaign?

Team Skull felt more believable because everyone in the game is well aware of who they are and treat them like lowlives. Whereas you only really hear the people affected by Team Yell's shenanigans saying "What are they doing?"

Rockets wanted to steal strong pokemons and sell them
Aqua and Magma were truly dumb I agree
Galactic thought the world was fucked and wanted to create a new universe
Plasma is basically PETA
Flare had basically a Thanos tier goal, kill most of the world so there's enough resources (for them mostly)
Skull is just a bunch punks that became Aether puppets

Now Yell is just a bunch of idiots cheering for Marnie, nothing else.

This red herring team trope done for 2 gens in a row is already old though, especially when both were based on western punk culture.

Removing the dumb 'end of the world' plot every pokemon game has and just making it a game about the pokemon challenge with you and hop dealing with crazy fans trying to sabotage you would be neat.

before the game came out I already predicted rose would be the villain
it happened, but I expected yell to have something to do with in like sm/usum but they didn't, instead, along with bede and marnie, they were forgotten about for the second half of the game until the end

They should have just cut the entirey Rose subplot had fleshed out Team Yell, They're the ones directly interfering with the gym challenge (which is the main focus of the story). The "Energy crisis" subplot was just bullshit all around.
