Meowth has basically adapted to his role of being somewhere between a human and a pokemon solely because he hangs out with two humans and speaks their language, and is sometimes even smarter than they are.
Would animals in real world be able to communicate with humans intelligently in our language, the conversation around humans and their relationships with animals would be completely different, and how we treat animals would also be entirely different.
