Pokémon has expanded its playerbase for the first time since Gen IV, as well as breaking 20m sales for the first time since Gen II, on top of its other revenues being the highest they've ever been. Games aren't Pokemon's tentpole product. The majority of Pokemon's marketing and merchandising is centered around the anime, not the games. The games are just merchandise at this point.
