It's Platinum because it's the best game to hang out in. It contains the best daily/events events, and the best methods to grinding levels/money/Pokedex-completion/Frontier-completion after main-game completion. Biggest downsides are its slower speeds in comparison to generations 3 and 5, how it's not quite as polished as HGSS, and the 24-hour cooldown between Pal Park usage.
I've replayed Emerald dozens of more times and actually consider Black 2 to be the best game in the franchise, but man, Platinum's got that 'comfy' self-contained setting and gameplay that promotes long-term play akin to an MMO.. HGSS is sorta there, but it's a little more awkward with its Safari Zone day-counter and specific methods for gym leader rematches with no good way to grind levels for NPC rematches or Pokedex completion. Generation 5 has near perfect gameplay performance, but is sorta stunted without its thriving local wireless/online from its release period (however, there's still a good single-player game there, unlike future games who are entirely dependent on their multiplayer, it's just that the whole experience feels slightly gutted).
