I tried playing Red and Blue back in the day and then I got to Virdian Forest
The place was really difficult which was stressing me enough but the trees terrified me
I didn't see them as trees, I saw them as horrible bulbous monsters. The leaves were their entire body with the shading making up its large eyes and pointy, spiked, freakish hands

The whole place was a maze of these awful, awful beings and I couldn't stand it. I never got past that area
Swore of handheld pokemon entirely until Diamond and Pearl (I was still scared of that game a bit because the back sprites were creepy. XY was the first time I could really play a handheld game).
I mainly grew up on Colosseum because at least the graphics weren't scary
