Things people didn't like in the last few generations (like humanoid starters, a lot of cutscenes, straightforward routes, no complex maze-y dungeons, lack of difficulty, kind of handholdy, no exploration, no edgy epic cool kaijumons, too many objectmons, shit story) were pretty amplified in gen 8, and the dex cut just soured everyone right from the beginning. The stuff that was new was quite poorly implemented and wasn't enough to reign in fans on the edge.

With that said I liked it, and it's one of my favorite gens.

All the reasons why their hated can be summed up by >>47624370, >>47624379 and >>47624399. Their just really underwhelming for what they could be as a proper mainline games on a console. The region is the most boring in the franchise structurally, most of the characters are either paper thin in personality, nonsensical like Rose, insufferable like Hop (who shows his face in literally every location in the fucking game except crown tundra) or have a disgusting lack of screen time. There’s also the fact that there’s another battle gimmick that no one really asks for (which serves as another excuse to shoehorn charizard which it and the other forced Kanto fan service took away the generations identity for the 3rd time after Alola and Kalos) and the online still somehow sucks ass compared to XY. Finally this a personal grip, I feel that Galar sucks ass for a region based on the UK and it utilises almost non of the most interesting parts of the source material (and chose to base it primarily off of a football theme which is the shittiest part of the UK hands down) and the interesting parts they do have are just static props in hollow locations that are structured like Ultra hallway.

The game was alright but it has things that feel unfinished and unpolished. The main plot was fine in regards to the Gym Challenge, That specifically was really fucking good, however everything else just an afterthought and didn't go anywhere.
Team Yell was okay but they were very weak all the way until you get to Spikemuth.

The Wild Area was really fucking good, but it was a complete detriment when the main routes were simplified even further than they were before.

It kills the mood a bit when you realize progressing means leaving the wild area and going to these linear hallways.

I enjoyed my time with it and I loved the new Pokemon specifically but a lot of the concepts felt unfinished and it leaves a lot to be desired.

The DLC made much better wild areas, I just wish we can get a full game in that style, which is what it looks like Legends Arceus could be.

I know it's a bait thread but here's my problem with Gen8, it's a shadow of what it could have been. People whine about the national dex and shit but none of that really bothers me. Say what you will about X/Y but it used the power of the 3DS to push the franchise to where it hadn't gone before, SwSh used the Switch to do... nothing innovative at all. And it's a real shame because the game is full of great ideas that ultimately fall far short of successful implementation.

The wild area is a fantastic idea, but it's an empty void with nothing interesting to do. Camping is amazing soul, but it's boring as fuck and ultimately pointless. The gym league and final tournament is quality stuff, but the order is fixed and there's zero payoff for a great setup. The villain's motives are inspired by the current energy crisis... in 1,000 years. The actual fuck is going on at GameFreak that this was their release on the Switch.

--Let me fix SwSh real fast--

There are no routes, it's just the wild area with towns dotting it. In order to traverse the wild area you need to use your team of Pokemon much like HMs from previous games. It's full of secrets and puzzles that aren't initially obvious. Raids aren't just in the middle of empty fields, they're at the end of winding paths and dungeons you need to explore. And make it pretty to look at with nice and memorable scenery.

Camping is now a game mechanic for the wild area only. Screw the free heals all over camping already does that, but now it's on a timer, you can only camp every so often. IV training is now a part of camping with minigames or something to that effect like super training, maybe have your pokemon fight each other in training battles for EV. Give us more then 2 toys, who tf decided to stop at 2? Every Pokemon has a preferred toy and it isn't immediately obvious so you need to play with them a bit to figure it out. Playing with them increases friendship and have your pokemon interact with each other at camp in various ways.

Gym challenge now works like a real sports league. You go around and fight gym leaders to collect enough wins to be eligible for the playoffs where you face off against all the other challengers who you either interacted with directly, like Marnie and Hop and Beade, and against background trainers you saw waiting around in the lobby and maybe talked to once. Winner of the playoffs gets the right to challenge the champion for his title. None of this recycling the gym leader nonsense. And it's all random seed, the playoffs having a fixed order, the hell was that? Credit where it's due though, the stadiums are great atmosphere for this and it does work well, even if it's not quite in lockstep with what you're doing as the player.

Alright, the story. What to say about this? It's ass. Story in Pokemon games is just an excuse to move the plot along. Honestly there's enough potential with the gym challenge in Pt. 4 to completely fill an entire game with sports league drama. We don't need even an evil team. There's quite literally no defending the story in SwSh, it's completely unsalvageable but if we're going to try the energy crisis needs to affect things *now* not 1,000 years from now, who wrote this crap? It's legitimately just an excuse to tie the legendary into the game, and it's beyond the worst implementation of it.

--Conclusion--
Imagine if the game we had gotten was like this. If the gameplay was that tight and fresh no one would even mind the dex being cut in half or moves being deleted or Megas being removed or any of the other things people whine about all the time.

Okay lets talk about the 10m render distance and shit performance. I can't help but think that GameFreak is fighting a massive pile of technical debt that is simply impeding their ability to implement all of these things. Yes corporate is probably making the poor design choices, but even given that there is no excuse for the kind of pop in and slowdowns that SwSh has, BotW was a far larger game and had none of these issues. They're probably using 10 year old code that was designed for the DS with stuff added over the years bloating performance and ultimately limiting what they can do with it. Now imagine if SwSh had been built from the ground up on a new engine or even just Unity.

Imagine... just imagine...
This is what makes me sad, what could have been.

The simple fact Omori&Masuda said they wouldn't be bringing in old pokemon only to sell them back to us later was a huge red flag for these 2 upcoming games for me. The entire experience is just overpriced, overhyped, on rails, and mediocre all around. At least we still have the old games to go back to.

IMO people overblow it, but the big problem is that it's not a "major" improvement over the last game. Like yeah, Pokemon's always been kinda static but they kinda set the expectation that it would do... more I guess?

But then it didn't really deliver on what people expected to be improvements. Game technically looks "better" but doesn't quite wow people the way other games on the console do. The dex cut didn't seem to actually facilitate any of the shit they said it would (and then they didn't even stick with it and the "no dlc" thing they had said before). It actively removed or kept features that were kinda neat out of the game (even ones that LGPE had like riding Pokemon), then shoved others like GTS in to Pokemon Immigrant Detention Center. Basically any place that isn't a wild area feels like even more of a setpiece than usual, and only the DLC ones feel like you're remotely exploring shit. There's even fewer dumb fun time wasters than normal outside of raids, which can be hit or miss. And then there's the story. Now, ultimately the story is just an excuse to push you along between towns and do a little more than just slap gym leaders, but it's also an excuse to do a bit of world building and such too. But Sword and Shield's just feels... more halfassed than usual?

Because, among all it's sins, it committed the greatest one of all. It cut pokemon just to sell them back to you later, figuratively and literally, with "100 old pokemon returning for each" being one of the selling points of the DLC.

By this logic literally every generation is "selling you monsters back" since no game has allowed you to capture everyone without transfering since G2. Atleast now you can do it with less than 15 bucks instead of 100+ bucks.

We have a somewhat interesting in the idea of the league being a proper sports league that's televised and everything. Alola kinda made it's "trials" interesting by not having literal gyms, so maybe this could be quirky and add to the regional identity. But then it immediately gets weird. Your dynamax band literally falls from the sky randomly, whereas megas pretend you earn them and outside of Koko farting out the z shit it's clear that Z-rings are practically a part of the trial as well. You just kinda wander between towns, but never really FEEL like you're in a major league outside of stadiums and Bede sperging about sponsorships. Team Yell does the classic road block shit, but whereas other teams felt like they were being shady and setting things up for you to go kick their ass later, Yell just kinda acts like nuisances until you get to Piers and they listen to him instead. Sonia drops random dog lore and hints at a cover up, but it doesn't really go anywhere outside of seeing a statue or a hot spring or whatever. Weird shit happens with Pokemon suddenly dynamaxing, and the explosions in Hammerlocke, but we're told to ignore it and just keep walking. Then you get to the near end of the main story and it remembers it needs a climax. Woah, Leon and Rose are working together on somethi- oh it's over. Rose wants to secure energy and is using the ancient space thing? Cool! But the problem won't happen for a THOUSAND YEARS, and he could have just waited one day. Sonia's slow ass realizes the dogs are relevant and so you go wake them up from forced foreshadowing battle forest. Then their AI slaps the space skeleton to death and Rose turns himself in and it's over. Then there's the fucking meme twins, who could have actually been interesting in the main game were they trying to keep the dogs covered up instead of making you meme battles for your box legend.

Not really. New generations are just that, new games with their own new inclusions. Old pokemon returning isn't a tagline/selling point, nor were they explicitly excluded for later, paid updates to those same games.

Wow my formatting was shit, fuck. But to finish it off, I feel like this story reflects the games in a way. Just like how the story can't commit to being simple adventure or something more, Sword and Shield as games can't commit to what experience they're trying to sell. It seems like it'll be interesting, but then doesn't really aim to WOW and haphazardly choses what to go all in on. So even if it isn't that much worse than previous games in many aspects, it just FEELS like we were let down because the scope could be so much bigger/better.
