If there were an enemy capable of absorbing energy (but weak to natural elements) then Typhlosion producing real fire could defeat it but Zoroark imitating fire with his energy wouldn't.
Sorta like STAB... I think mostly all STAB attacks have the Pokemon capable of producing its own element one way or another, but there might be exceptions.
