The only character I really didn't like that much is Hop because he doesn't seem to have an edge to him.

Yeah, they have really charming characterization. People really like to headcanon personalities to characters like cynthia but most pre-gen 7 characters were pretty bland with their muh strength or muh friendship/bond spiel.

Gen 7 characters are pretty good across the board
Gen 8, far less so, there's a few okay ones, a lot of bland and underused ones, and a few absolutely awful ones
