You just learned through trial and error, it wasn't actually that hard. For the most part it's pretty intuitive; fire burns grass and melts ice, water puts out fire and turns ground to mud, plants absorb water, ect.
I would compare it to having to learn the alphabet

For resistances, just assume anything attack it’s own typing gets resisted (fire resist fire, etc) and common sense (water puts out fire, therefore fire attacks won’t do much to water types)

It's one of the more obscure ones but it's based on some mythologies saying that cold iron nullifies fairies' powers and/or does a lot of harm to them.

my autistic party trick talent was to be able to identify what type a pokémon was just by looking at it. thinking about its color and its connections to a real life animal really helped. Messed up on Drapion bc i would mix it up with Skorupi, its preevolution. The Bug typing in Skorupi is replaced by dark in evolution.

i guess it can be owed to how great the devs are at coming up with good designs that they can make the type that easy to learn and remember.

I'm a Gen 1er and the only thin that confuses me are the new types and the fact that Gen 1 literally burned into my head that ghost are weak to psychic.

I think this is the one that kids get.
The real problem are the odd ball things like rock being not resistant to electric while ground is, and that rock and ground are dual parings most of the time.
