I wonder what percentage of Americans first exposure was the anime vs. the games, and how that affected things
Pokemania wasn't a thing until 1999, which means the anime had been rolling the same 50 or so episodes for a good 2 years at that point

Each successive game does more and more with its character development, but it seems like the professors always take a back seat
If they're such a big deal in universe, I'd like to see more of them

Completely untrue. She spends a brunt of the game researching the darkest day/the legendary Pokemon. She hoped to find something that'd make her grandmother feel like she had talent. She publishes her findings and takes up being a professor deliberately. The role isn't just thrust onto her.

1. Sycamore, because he's the first professor that you get to fight in a game and he's a pretty nice dude. The fact that he's younger that the other professors makes him more approachable and i like how positive he is.

2. Rowan, he seems intimidating but he's actually nice. I love how he doesn't take shit from anyone, especially Team Galactic.

3. Kukui, he's just a bro and a really fun character, probably the most fleshed out professor in the series. Plus he's got a wife and is a wrestler, that dude is fucking cool and you can't tell me otherwise.

I don't how that is devlopment? Take Hop as an example, he initially wanted to do the gym challenge, and after a series of failures decided maybe he would be better doing something else.
Sonia didn't know what she wanted to do, got told to do something and did it. It was extremely forced

He was supposed to be the final boss, his team would be a stronger version the one his grandson has but with the fully evolved starter that neither of you chose. Also, an e-mail in his lab implies that he rejected the championship.
