Game versus anime. Ash got to Viridian City in one day, but he spent part of it running for his life and part of it on a bike.

It's also possible that Ash's dad just spent the time loafing around, exploring the route, instead of focusing on arriving quickly.

I wonder if they could have implemented a fake-time thing in the games where x amount of steps = 1 day of in-game travel so you could have (and miss) different Pokemon/events/shit happen thorough the fakeyears
