gen 1 had an unbalanced dex and too few monsters, shallow move pools, no phys/special split
gen 2 had the same issues and had a terrible nonlinear aspect which fucked up the level curve
gen 3 had really bad mon placement (no ground or fire types OR moves before watson who has a fucking magneton) also STILL no Phys special split.
gen 4 had really bad dex balance as well (electric type gym with no electric types, fire type e4 with no fire types)
It also took them like 7 generations to figure out HMs are fucking retarded and go against the concept of being able to use whatever pokemon you want by effectively limiting you to using pokemon that can learn surf/strength/rocksmash/etc
