Nah, he isn't worse than Juan. At least Wallace had an original sprite and personality. Meanwhile Juan is just Wallace attitude-wise and his overworld sprite is a slightly edited Steven.

Wallace is bad in Emerald because he replaced Steven as a champion, but Juan was just an incredibly lazy and unoriginal attempt at creating a new gym leader.

The one thing that kept me from disliking Hau is when I realized the point of his character: he's just a chill guy that doesn't care for battling and wants to have a good time (+open his own malasada shop in the manga which should of been in the game). It's not like Shauna whose a "friendly rival" but continues to battle you and doesn't seem to have an end goal, Hau literally does not care for battling (at least in normal SM not the remakes). You beat him in front of his whole town, grandfather included, during a big festival and after just moving to Alola. His response? He doesn't care, it's trivial to him in the end. He doesn't even finish the island trials in the original game, and it takes him until the POST-GAME for him to finally have a serious battle against his grandfather, the person he "aspires" to follow. They could of saved Hau's character for most people if he just stopped being the player's rival midway through the game and let Gladion become the final rival encounter/Champion. It could give Gladion a chance to grow further by having him meet and train under Kukui. Just let Hau make maladas and be happy for fuck's sake Game Freak.

N works for me where Lilie doesn't because the story isn't exclusively about N. It's about YOU and N. The player and N are treated at the center of the story. You are also recgonized as a powerful force in the narrative: towards the end Ghetsis takes you aside and tries to convince you to join him, because 1. he recgonizes that you will get the other dragon and will become threat no. 1 to his plans, and 2. you have the power to sway N away from Ghetsis. Whereas in Lilie, the story revolves around her and not you. You're escorting someone else who is the hero of the story. You could be erased from the story and Lilie's story would still proceed with Nebby lasering mom, not you defeating her.

So many rival characters and all of them are so shit

Bede has more personality than hop and marnie combined, and I really have a soft spot for "asshole" rivals
Marnie is, ingame and irl, a character made for coom and waifufags, at least Lillie's backstory with Lusamine, and Gladion and shit makes her (barely) more interesting, her "protect me uwu" personality is a drag
I already explained why Hau > Hop
Gladion is the better rival of all of the above

I do wish Bede was harder to beat though, hell I would like Swoosh to be a lot harder, I played UM and I thought it was a bit of a challenge, only turning on exp share that one time I swapped like half my party for some time, only used pokemon I liked how they looked, pokemon games are so easy you can be very reckless and screw yourself just enough to make it fun
