The thing is all of them are related or similar enough.

A dog evolving into a cat makes no sense however you try to spin it.

Shapeshifting kitsune are one of the most well-known things in Japanese folklore, even in the West. It even has the white chest and tail tip. It turning into a similar youkai, the nekomata, isn't too much of a stretch.
