I think those are its legs. As long as they have a thin, sleek layer of fur/hair on them, they shouldn't chafe, right? It's like when fatties wear compression shorts to protect themselves from chub rub.

i dunno, lumps of flesh with fur on them? I found lucario's unite artwork while looking him up and they made it look almost leathery.

to be fair it's not like they added much texture to the rest of his body (it's pretty much entirely just a weird plastic look all around with maybe one or two things here or there indicating a tiny smidgeon of texture)

Yeah that’s the thing with TPC being adamant that Pokémon don’t wear clothes as part of their base design. It confused the makers of Detective Pikachu to the point where they cut Sawk out of the film because they couldn’t find a way to make the gi not look like clothing. I just assume if they have pants or a dress or whatever it’s just hair.

I guess with a franchise as big and old as pokemon there's bound to be some inconsistencies and retcons in the universe like pokemon weight/length or the existence of real animals in the world. There are deffinitely some pokemon that are supposed to be wearing clothes like troh/sawk and machoke/machamp etc.

It looks kinda leathery in the Pokken art too? Honestly, I don't understand Lucario's hair even in HD.
To me, Riolu looks like it has two sets of ears, one pointed and one floppy, but the floppy pigtails on Lucario don't look like ears. I've always tried to think of them as hair, but in these pics they don't look like hair.

The film makers of the detective pikachu movie were working very closely with the Pokémon company who was very strict on how the Pokémon should be depicted. That’s word from TPC itself who didn’t want any Pokémon being depicted as wearing clothing on their base design in a much more realistic setting.

Maybe it's supposed to be semi-metallic flesh? It looks like the stripe on the face and the strip of black between the "shirt" and "shorts" are raised off the body slightly, like armored skin? And it's the same color as the metal shoulder parts.
