Honestly, it was wrong from the beginning to try to enforce difficulty. And it's just problematically paced, often as a result of its story issues. A lot of the characters also don't fit together well, because they weren't designed to exist together in a setting like this one.
That being said, I'm willing to overlook the writing issues and see if the game is actually fun to play after they're done unfucking how problematically limiting the pool of early 'mons is. They unfucked the old problem with loyalty screwing you mid-battle, so I have some hope that the game will stop hurting to get rolling in a playthrough, and hopes that I'll actually get to enjoy trying to monotype from early on.
