Dawn should have been focused on something big regarding her own characters growth/achievements like Iris becoming Champion and showcasing her shine (even if she did lose) or Misty getting a Mega and a fleshed out gym stating she wants her gym to be #1, she should get to show off a fully evolved new team member like Typhlosion and maybe a Top Coordinator spot? But nothing more than waifu gags with Koharu/Chloe (one of the most nothing characters in this show. she’s really bland)

How about the possibility of the all the Kanto gym leader becoming the supporting cast of Jounrey like Professor Sakuragi and his assistants? Such as --

-- Brock will take an internship in Vermilion pokemon center
-- Lt Surge is the gym leader of Vermilion city
-- Misty visits Ash during her break time
--Sabrina will be an actress who often work on the studio on Vermilion city
-- Erika will be a fan of Vermilion sweets
-- Janine will be interested in Ash due to his past victory against her father and often show up to train with him.
-- Gary should have became the viridian gym leader by now.

Unfortunately I can't find an excuse for Blaine to visit Vermilion city.

Blaine's in a very, very weird spot. The anime used his beta design, but Journeys has aggressively pushed the character designs toward Sugimori's modern style. Lt. Surge and Gary in particular have been drastically updated to look like their HGSS drawings, but with Sugimori's modern style of eyes. How would they go about updating Blaine without just... Making him look like a completely different person from how he debuted? The best they could do is explain it that Magmar burned all his hair off so he grew a mustache to compensate or something.

Thoughts on the OST so far? While the hoedown/mexican party music are a bit overused, I think the more relaxing and action/emotional tracks are some of the series best in a long time. Yuki Hayashi has delivered a really fresh sound to Pokemon, with the most exciting tracks sounding right out of MHA or Haikyuu.
That being said, it's been nice to hear some new tracks in the latest episodes. Many tracks have become a little overused. It's been nice hearing a couple old tracks too.

She was never dopey nor a tree climber. She was literally using Piplup’s Bubblebeam to fix her hair and telling Iris her morning routine to look elegant as a Coordinator was important. Dawn was never a happy go-lucky tree climber type.

It feels like something more suited for an Ash/Iris/Bonnie-type of character.

Most of those were gag scenes or just climax scenes. Her character didn’t and wasn’t portrayed this way. She should be optimistic but not a dopey dumbass as a contrast to level-headed and normal Chloe. It’s weird since she was hanging with Lyra and was more down to earth to Lyra being kind of a newbie dumb-dumb.

I didn't think I'd ever be made to feel gifted for having the mental faculties to not be bothered by a cartoon 10 year old climbing a tree, but /padt/ finds a way as always to make even the most mundane, measured emotional response seem like a high example of evolved thinking. The problem anons are referencing is that it is OoC for Dawn to do it, coupled with her goofy face. Aspects of her character are being played up or completely made up so she can contrast with Koharu.

Wasn’t Dawn mostly level-headed. You had Iris who was snarky and thought she was mature/cool, Misty thought she was super beautiful, May could be kind of ditzy/airy, Dawn always seemed in reality most of the time so it just feels strange she’s some wild child + free spirit-Kid type contrast to stiff normie Chloe.

And I'm saying why bother? It's not notable for her character, it's not a betrayal of who she is, and we're also looking at an image without context. Dawn's a fully realized character. She can like staying prim sometimes, and having fun in nature at other times. One can also infer that where Ash once took her on a fun adventure on the road, parts of that experience may have rubbed off on her for her to want to share the same thing with Koharu.

"fully-realized character" may be pushing it a bit, but you're right that it's a situation where we lack context. It does feel like the writers are exaggerating aspects of her character just to push a dichotomy between her and Koharu, which is poor writing.

She was more so speaking in the sense to keep her mother from worrying about her on her journey. That’s not the same as her climbing a tree and acting like Grookey. Contrast these moments with Chloe to her moments with characters like May, Lyra, Iris, that’s Dawn’s unique femme yet sometimes fun/moving self. Not an overplayed dummy. She never did this around the other Pokegirls. She was super down to earth with those new people and Curious not pulling Kid Goku shit.

Naive as a Coordinator, on a character level Dawn was pretty much the same character from start to finish.

Either way Dawn shouldn’t be doing things that would make Chloe perceive her as outlandish or oddballish. She wasn’t seen as weird by other girls in the series. In fact she was talking about how Brock was a weirdo like Cilan.

most of Ash-Dawn similarities were with how their journeys started on first day (was late/couldnt find Rowans lab, got attacked by birds/Ariados, injured Piplup/Pikachu, saw Ho-Oh/Mesprit etc.)

Dawn’s character got kind of bland in terms of personality after the Wallace Cup and her confidence thing was finished and she was mostly stagnant so many times her role was a basic everyman type in many episodes. She was about as basic as Ash in regular episodes. She didn’t change as a character but became a better Coordinator like Ash becoming a better trainer. Only difference is Ash had Paul to bring out some emotions.

Didn’t help she had a full team of six and nothing really evolved. Piplup/Pachirisu/Buneary trio were mostly stagnant. Mamoswine was always getting clobbered by tiny Pokémon in Contest and being backed up by Cyndaquil/Pachirsu. Cyndaquil didn’t evolve til post series and was late along with Togekiss who was great. She really shouldn’t had released Ambipom.

I remember when DP first started people were comparing Dawn more to Misty than May, because in those earlier episodes it seemed like Dawn had a big temper like when she argued with Ash in Nando's first episode, blew up at Paul for forgetting her name at Roark's Gym, how outgoing and aggressive she was with Piplup and leaping into the action in fillers, getting mad when her hair was messed up, fighting with Piplup, etc.

A lot of her temper was toned down a lot after the first year.

Dawn got Togekiss only 2 episodes before her Grand Festival aired. It really was strange. I didn't mind Togekiss personality wise but to give her a fully evolved pokemon only 2 eps before her finale tournament was so odd.

She should of either got Togekiss a lot earlier or just brought Ambipom back.

She had a pretty amicable relationships with her rivals. Ursula was her Harley clone but never got into heavy back and forth fights like with May/Harley. Hell Ursula had better interactions with Jessie. Zoey/Dawn was teacher student which was bland. Kenny was bland. Nando was more of Zoey’s rival than Dawn’s.

I think DP's long pacing was a problem, since DP was 191 episodes long they had to make sure Dawn's Contest arc didn't end "too early" in the saga or else she'd have nothing to do for the rest of it while Ash was still doing his Gyms. You can tell her last few losses (the one she had to Kenny and then James) was just to extend her Contest arc a bit longer so she didn't win her ribbons too quickly. If Sinnoh was only a 3 year saga like XY or Hoenn they would have paced this better.

The Tomioka special. This is one reason I am glad he isn’t in charge of series construction anymore. Most of the characters under his watch just get better at what they. But they don’t really grow as people.

I like the amount of callbacks in the previews with Dawn only old fans would get:

- Dawn holding Budew the same way she went to touch the mushroom Pokemon in BW

- Dawn climbing trees (possibly nod to her learning from Iris)

- Dawn's messy hair from waking up a reference to that early DP episode

- Piplup's antics jumping into a hot pot of soup

- Dawn doing a contest appeal at the beginning

The only thing I can see negative about this arc so far is it doesn't seem like any of Dawn's pokemon are going to appear besides Piplup. We're this "late" into the preview material and none of her other pokemon are shown in the magazine scans, bios or posters. So I don't think they're appearing.

I think it depends how the PWC operates. I'd thought that if he had to do a series of battles, like in a normal tournament setting, he'd be using essentially a different team each time to counter his opponent and then use his all star team at the end.
I don't think this is how the PWC works though

It's going to be so fucking nice to see Dawn again in a few short hours. I really never thought we'd see this day bros. I'm so happy. One thing I'm anticipating is how Dawn and Goh's meeting will transpire. Will Goh tense up like he has for some of Ash's friends, or will they hit it off? As a long time watcher, it feels like Go is Ash's best friend since Dawn/Brock, so it'd be nice to see their meeting.

They keep pulling this exact bit, season after season. It's to the point where it's not hype, it's the expected course of action. I'd like to see more neutral matchups, like Gengar vs Raichu instead of the overused
