The narrative shift for the third version is nothing new. It's happened in every third version and the changes become increasingly significant until Gen 4, which is roughly on par with Gen 3's changes and even goes out of its way to highlight them. It's just that Gen 5 took it way, way farther.
This is the consequence of constantly saying BW2 are sequels as if that means something or that it inherently makes them better than Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum; it doesn't.
