Johtofan here. Gen 3 made some dumb decisions but it did not kill Pokemania. The fad was dying before that. Also it’s disingenuous to call not transferring being able to transfer Earlier Pokémon into RS Dexit because all the species were still coded into the games and were made available with Emerald and Colluseum.
Merrick is the enemy not Gen 3.

i really wish Kanto wasnt completely neutered as post game, and that it was a concept that continued down the series.
still no idea why it didn't carry over to other gens

There were only a handful of old Pokemon in the game while the new ones were without a doubt the main ones in the spotlight. That’s not all, though – all of the hard work we’d done over the past 2 generations were thrown out the window with the new games not being trade compatible to these games. While those are the main things, the other thing I really regret about generation 3 and onwards is how there was never a real “Stadium” game on par with gens 1 and 2 – Colosseum’s mode that tries to emulate Stadium is impressively bare bones and has no Rental Pokemon.

Speaking of Colosseum, yes, the old Pokemon were brought back through it, but only the Johto Pokemon – not the Kanto Pokemon that holds Pokemon’s formerly gigantic fanbase. Even for those who were happy to see the Johto Pokemon come back, it was hardly worth playing through such a mediocre title. Eventually the original 151 were brought back – in the exact same game that we played at the start of all this. Ignoring the fact that we’re not stupid enough to pay money for the same game god knows how much later, this game is compatible with only Colosseum rather than the Stadium games.

Yeah, I’m a pretty big Pokemon fan and I actually do like gen 3, but I refused to buy Sapphire until Colosseum got me somewhat used.

Because before the internet compatibility in the games, it made it way more easier to use the games as intended. Pokemania helped because you could just go to places as a kid where you were encouraged to meet and play with others. And there were less distribution events in general despite the games now relying on them more than ever before. The fact that less people were playing and there was less popularity in general meant it was much harder to achieve all the features and round out the dex, which became much harder now that you couldn't transfer your Gen 1-2 backlog.

This was mostly corrected by Gen 4 opening up online trade and wifi distribution at places like ToysR Us and Gamestop. But Gen 3 almost encouraged you to just buy all the games and trade with yourself.

The problem is it took years to be able to get everything legally and it was across 5 handhelds and 2 console games. Which meant you had a bunch of people just cheating their way through the dex and flooded the market with hacked pokemon.

Sorta. DESU RS would have made a dexit like outrage if the internet was as big back then instead of being primitive. Thy had no plans for FRLG and only made them once people were pissed only 202 of the 386 mons were in the game and FRLG were made to appease genwunners.

I do agree that Gen 3 did get rid of a lot of good stuff while adding some other stuff that was also nice like abilities and the graphics were nice since moving to the GBA.

What's stranger is the Johto purge did not happen till later. Johto was mentioned in the Ocean Museum and by an NPC who states you actually moved from Johto. Though in Emerald all Johto refences got scrubbed for some reason.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to maintain a powerful marketing campaign that basically allows you to generate a global phenomenon? I'm guessing its because Its because by then the games were considered rebooted from gen 1/2 and they didn't want to confuse the kids coming into the series. Early on we all thought Gen 3 was a sequel to GSC. Everyone figured Gen 2 would be remade eventually so it was figured Johto would be reintroduced eventually, which it did of course.

My favorite stupid theory from back then was the idea that Orre was post-apocolyptic Johto.

Pokemania was very fatigued and on its last legs by the tine Ruby and Sapphire came out. There were two long years after crystal released where all facets of the franchise started to feel drawn out and fatigued. The anime was dragging out and adding more filler, the card game was releasing more sets of the same 251 and felt labored, the mania was dwindling and nearly dead. They squeezed the phenomenon and the first two gens for every drop. Not to mention kids that were 8 or 9 at the release of Red and Blue were now getting close to their teens and going through puberty. Suddenly childish things were looked down upon and a hightened focus on girls came on. Riding bmx with your bros and looking for pictures of hawt bewbs to jerk off to behind the bushes was way more important. By the time RS was released the hype was on life support. Gen 3 just pulled the plug on pokemania.

People can deny all they want, but Ruby and Sapphire did a bad job retaining and exciting people and ended up not reigniting the franchise as well as it could've. There was a year between the Mewtwo movie's theatrical release in the US and Gold/Silver's release in which the popularity of the franchise took a huge downturn. Despite that, GSC sold very well, and got people excited again for a second wave.

You can't deny that the removal of features and compatibility was a huge reason for the downturn. Older fans didn't just "grow out" of it,they recognized it as a raw deal From the gameplay standpoint most longterm players would actually use, everythign Gen 3 added was more worthwile than what it took away. But what it ended up taking away was bad optics for the series.

Ultimately all it did was create complacency in both the fandom and GF that we'd be ok with losing features every new game by considering them regional quirks.

It was definitely winding down before then but in many ways RS were the nail in the coffin. In the grander scale it still sold well and Pokemon retained a smaller but loyal fan base, but RS killed the remainder of the public interest. It never really recovered until XY and that came at a heavy price.
