Lucario also wouldn't be as popular if he wasn't easily available in DP. Zoroark failed to catch on because you couldn't get him without an event. I'm sure Zeraora would be more popular if he wasn't a mythical.

I had the impression no one, not even Nintendo, gave a shit about him. Wasn’t he released for the first time after usum had come out and let’s go was around the corner? And his shiny was released for the card games I think. That’s not shilling that’s borderline hiding him away in a closet and forgetting about him. Nah its really popular. In TCG its GX card was worth much more than similiar GX cards specifically because it was Zeraora. It was also like 6 most popular Alolan Pokemon in the Google poll.

While I generally hate designs like this I find Zeraora cooler than the rest of the bunch. The cute cat face alone makes it so much better than Jewcario.

I think it's unfair to say Zoroark flopped to death when despite the less amount of shilling it got compared to Lucario + the in-game sabotages, it's still the second favorite unova pokemon. Yeah, it got beat by a pokemon with no shilling, but Chandelure was OU in BW, easily accessible, and Japan just love the blue spirit flame.

They only made it Mythical to make it more desirable and easily shillable. Nothing in its lore, design inspiration, etc. point to any myths or legendariness. Same goes for Zarude this gen.
