I've barely been paying attention to this franchise for like 3 years after becoming disillusioned with the games, what happened with Johto? I thought HGSS were almost universally agreed to be a Top 3 Pokemon game.

It's a pretty bad time to be buying cards of hgss, anon. The prices are crazy inflated, and there are so many fakes running around it's damn near impossible to get an authentic cart.
Like an earlier posted recommended, just get an r4 cart and play it there. You're basically getting the same experience buying a second hand cartridge online since they're all fake as well.

Not that anon, but from what I’ve seen Merrick made a post claiming Gen 8 was his favorite because it’s British and that Gen 2 was the worst (something about it relying on kanto). Pretty soon a bunch of YouTube’s started nitpicking Gen 2 and Johto and while they did make some fair points most of the complaints were either exaggerated, wrong, or opinions that they were treating like objective truths. Then their followers starting parroting what they were saying and exaggerating the exaggerations and attacking anyone who tried to defend the Johto or correct a misconceptions. At one point PokemonChallenges made an image that showed Johto Leaders and Elite 4 with only Kanto Pokémon as a joke and his followers actually believed it to be true (proving that they know nothing about the games they constantly shit on). Then some of them when in vp and started shitposting about Johto and spreading Gen wars while the jannies do nothing.

Because of the seemingly random hatred towards Johto basically coming out no logical place. One anon came up with a rather bizarre theory that TPC is paying people to slander Johto so that Game Freak doesn’t have to make a Let’s Go Johto (pic related for more details). The fact that the Johto region and Pokemo are either neglected by Game Freak and TPC was used as support for this theory.
