This and the Iris cameo really make me reappreciate the Misty and Brock cameos last gen. Like comparing the Misty and Lana interactions to Koharu and Dawn or the Iris battle to the Cerulean gym battle, it's like night and day.

Apart from normies who just like them because nostalgia, Brock and misty kind of don't get enouh credit from us I think. It's true they didn't really have a 'story' or anything like May or Dawn or whoever, but their strength was that they both had very strong personallities that bounced off them as a core group and other characters well, and I think those Alola episodes kind of proved that. As much as I do like Dawn, I could not say the same thing about her.

Yeah, that was especially egregious with Brock, who definitely did overstay his welcome after Misty left and he largely devolved into JUST being a running gag because he had pretty much zero interesting chemistry with the Misty replacements. But still, for what it's worth, they were very fun characters (with fun pokemon even) and sometimes that's all you really need.

Say what you will of Iris, she at least managed to bring a fast moving /PADT/ with hype surrounding her champion label, speculation about Haxorus, Ash finally using Dracovish, Dragonite getting a new move and her Ash interactions. Maybe Dawn will appear again in November, who knows. It really does put in perspective though without Contests the writers generally have trouble adapting Dawn's role, she had the same problem with her BW cameo.

This is what makes me realize May probably won't appear even if there were no VA issues, without a Contest tournament she would literally be "just there" and I don't want to see May treated like that if she ever appears.

I think the issue is Dawn was fairly surface level outside of Contest. She never had any developments on a character level but just simply became closer to her profession. It’s not like May who was a complete child and inefficient on her own and a crybaby, Iris being kind of a haughty brat who had to get knocked down a bit or even Lillie becoming of a princess. Dawn mostly just stayed the same. Her confidence stuff revolves around her being a Coordinator. Once she got down she got back up so essentially back to square one.

It’s weird seeing her with Chloe who doesn’t grow as a Pokémon trainer but as a person.

As long as Dawn doesn't get screwed over in the second part and does some decent battling I think her return is handled alright so far.

Except that would have only worked if the series had a lot of eccentric quirky character and Chloe had to knock some common sense to them. Unfortunately her dynamic with Ash is nonexistent and the show doesn't have many quiky characters. Chloe's character is held back due to poor execution.

How do I explain this with my poor English ? Let me use Fate Grand Carnival as an example where Mashu plays the role of an "Everyman" character like Chloe. However the main reason Mashu's character worked so well on Fate Grand Festival (unlike the actual FGO) was due to the Female FGO player & the Servents eccentric personality and quirk.

Basically Chloe's require other quiky character for her character to work.
Even an English Pixiv doujin managed to execute Chloe's character way better than the anime due to her dynamic with Ash.

That's this series in a nutshell though, most interactions and characters are very shallow this time around, and the callbacks are no exception. Iris, Infernape, even Gary to extent because 'project mew' sure as hell isn't going to happen often, have all felt like really cheap viewer bait rather than actually trying to do anything interesting with their returns.

Let me tell you an open secret that everybody knows but only few admits --

"Majority of people are only interested in episodes that involves Ash".

People were excited about Iris because she was Ash's PWC opporent. People were interested in Gary due to Ash's old pokemon returning & a leak about him battling Gary. The main reason less people are interested in today's episode is because it barely involve Ash and Pearlshipping.

I hate to break it to you but past character cameos were always like this.

Look at Misty's AG cameos. Her first one she barely gets anytime to interact with the AG cast because the villains and plot in the ep happened almost immediately and they're on the run and meet that Princess with the Togepi and so forth. Her second AG cameo she's basically just treated like Tracey is and interacts with Max a bit.

Not really? Goh is a fraction as competent with battling, nowhere near as physically capable, and even after he opened up to Ash and Koharu he still has reservations about working with others, as seen with him being reluctant to join Project Mew without the goading of Gary.

I think the problem is stuff like the posters and anipoke twitter hyped up Dawn appearing way too much when this is really Koharu's arc. Dawn is going to play second fiddle to the Darkrai/Cresselia stuff next ep too.
