the theme occurs throughout the game. the resurrection of fossils, the frequent alignment of scientists with team rocket/just being freaky weirdos throughout the game, porygon, the entire silph co thing. a lot of what we now probably take for granted with the series was set up in gen 1 and played to that theme as well, insofar as shit like X items, Pokeballs, and whatever else

Kinda tired to explain this now, but trading Pokemon originally was about transferring their data via PC, similar to how Bill turned into a Pokemon.

The concept of Pokemon evolving from trade is the data being corrupted by being mixed up in the process, and thats why you cant find traded pokemon in the Wild back then, pic related is a nice example of that.

This theme is also brought in Gen2, Onyx/Scyther get mixed with the metal coat when traded, Poliwhirl with the King Rock you get the idea.

Also Magnemite, Voltorb, Grimer, Koffing are all Pokemon man-made because of human interference.

And Ditto too, since he is a failed attempt to recreate Mew.

Lot of shoutouts to Kanto and older gens used as comparison plus the evolving region of Unova.

The truth and ideals is a retarded side theme by the way, especially when you have to condense it in a set of pokemon.

HGSS Johto does also focus on enviroment too.

The pokedex is a pretty big plot point in Kanto. There was a lot of emphasis put on discovering new pokemon, both in universe and in marketing.

There was some hint at industrialization but Black City made it more about greed.
Anyway the whole region was about contrasts in general, more themes at the same time bringing a little of everything from the older gens too.
From the spoof Kanto dex to its scientific experiments with Genesect being Mewtwo alike, then folklore and beliefs with dragons representing human aspects and psychology like some Sinnoh did and Volcarona's abandoned worshipping, even predicted ayy lmaos with Kyurem, they even put that meme who was popular at the time "knights, pirates and ninjas" with team plasma.
Also the frenship between pokemon and humans usual, same old lame topic. Generational struggle between humans too. Lot of stuff thrown together.

The game likes to tell you that its theme is "truth and ideals", but nothing in the story actually reflects this. There is no conflict at all over the rejection of reality for fantasy or vice versa.
You could argue the urbanization of Unova is an example of building an "ideal" world on top of a "true" one, but that's a setting trope that isn't relevant to anything that actually happens in the game.

Silph Co, the cloning facility, Bill, and in general the presentation where alot of the stuff you're handling is meant to be new in universe. The remakes retconned this as the backstory of the Pokemon world was fleshed out more.

Thankfully Pokemon trade has become so common that there's always a Haunter or a Kadabra being traded at some point in time. In the past Alakazams were rarer because their trainers were dark arts users themselves who wanted to summon ghost Pokemon for themselves. This is why folktales about boys being turned to Kadabras began, paranoia and superstition over these trainers.

One thign about Kanto's tech/urbanization theme no one mentions comes from gen II and the Pokemon tower being rebuilt into a radio station and all the graves moved and reentombed. always thought that was a bit macabre. Always felt Gen 4 should've had some sort of sidequest with a lost Pokemon soul confused inside the Radio tower not realizing they moved its grave. You could lead him to the new graveyard and get an item from it.

Not them, but it was literally stated by Masuda & the devs that's what Unova's theme was. They mentioned it when discussing the bridges they developed in the region, as brides are symbolic of connections between places/people.

I'd have figured the theme was contrast or thesis & antithesis had they never said anything.

Connecting contrasts and opposites still implies contrasts play a relevant theme in Unova. Unova as uniting, you are not wrong mentioning it but at the same time it doesn't denies the other themes.
