I could be wrong here, but I do think the only reason Dawn got a cameo in July is they plan on bringing her back again in November when her games come out. That's 4 months from now, so it doesn't make sense to bring her back so early and not show her when she has two sets of games coming from Nov-Jan.

I also get the feeling the ep will end with Dawn and Koharu promising to meet up again, and it might very well happen in a future trip to Sinnoh. "Project Piplup" is still going on all year and since it doesn't seem like Go will get a Piplup there's really not much other way to advertise it than with Dawn some more.

I think people often forget old character cameos are usually done to prop up the current characters. Dawn's cameo arc is about Koharu's development, much like May came back for Dawn's, or Misty's was for Togepi, or Dawn's was for Iris in BW.

This is how cameos have always operated.

As long as Dawn gets a good showing battling TR next week and some decent Ash interactions, I'll be content. Most of it will likely start off with them just seeing the injured Cresselia.

I do think Piplup should get to beat something after it got taken down in 1 hit by a Rhydon. Probably no coincidence the Matori grunts have a Rhyperior...

The moment the magazine scans and posters didn't showcase any of her pokemon besides Piplup, I knew they weren't appearing. Remember even Emolga was on the magazine scans before Iris' cameo and all it did in the episode was fly around and put on the lights. If the Pokemon aren't featured in a magazine they probably aren't appearing.

What's the genuine reason for the lack of hype? Nothing in the week leading up to it, nothing during and after the episode aired. Iris's episode got multiple threads to the bump limit.

Ash vs. Iris was a battle in the world tournament where they both had new Pokemon, and Axew evolving was 10 years overdue. Dragonite vs. Dragonite was also something we never really had before, plus Iris was in her champion gown and Drayden appeared.

Dawn's cameo isn't really for herself, but to further Koharu's development. And next week is mostly about TR attacking Darkrai/Cresselia. A similar problem happened in BW, where Dawn was essentially sidelined in her own cameo arc.

At least the writers are being consistent, Dawn has never been the star of her own cameo arc.

Nah, the thing is "official" battles will always get more hype than anything else. If Dawn were competing in a full Contest on-screen using different Pokemon i guarantee there would be more hype.

Dawn doesn't appear till 10 minutes into the episode. Usually most girls who cameo return within the first few minutes, so if you watched this ep only for Dawn and don't care about Koharu's development I can see why they're disappointed.

Also I think /vp/ has more hardcore fans of the anime than other places that are more casual (like twitter/tumblr), or filled with less shitposters (like most current serebii users), so standards are a bit different here.

Also keeping up the tradition of showing off returning girls' feet. May returns in DP: wears sandals and Arabian dress for that contest. Dawn returns in BW: Swimsuit episode. I discovered /vp/ around 2015 when the "Ash and Serena's first date" title was announced. That title was hype inducing (or bait) and eventually I think through a google search a /vp/ thread popped up about it, I lurked for awhile then realized most of the users here had followed the anime for a long time and stuck around.

I noticed in the pokemon-matome thread all the Japanese users are saying how Megumi's voice for Dawn sounds really different here, and some thought it was a different voice actor. Granted it is 9 years later, so the VA aged in real life and probably forgot how she voiced Dawn.

Kinda goes to prove the Japanese are very receptive when a voice changes even if it's the same exact VA

I feel like they're preventing Koharu from seeing Ash in a serious battle because her character arc will end with her choosing the same path that Ash travels after witnessing an Ash battle in the master class. And no, this has nothing to do with romance. I just think it'll be cool if Koharu befriends many of Ash's past companions, but the one who'll have the biggest impact on what she'll become is Ash himself even though she doesn't know the guy.
It's like her character arc coming full circle. From thinking that Ash is some sort of wierdo to wanting to battle or even surpass him would be great.

Not sure its fair to compare this to previous cameos, or even call it one.
Dawn coming back is as apart of a special, meant for gen 4 shilling, which is different for any of the other characters. Also, Journeys operates differently as a series than older ones in that one of it's main selling points is the bringing back of older companions, so again an unfair comparison.

I don't see why she can't be inspired by multiple girls, if anything it makes more narrative sense to as long as they each show her different things. It looks like Dawn will show her contests, so maybe Serena could show her showcases or rhyhorn racing, even.
And like I said, Serena herself went through the process of finding what she wanted to do so maybe she can push Koharu in the right direction.

The way you guys were talking about it I expected the episode to be shit, but it was perfectly fine. It re-established Dawn, believably set up the reason Ash, Go, and Koharu were all in Sinnoh at the same time but in different places, and was pretty entertaining on the humor end between the Dawnand Koharu gags and dream sequence. What exactly has people on here to turned off by it?

Anon, you are talking from the perspective of some who hasn't lived in that world all their life-where stuff like that isn't the norm. Pokemon are entirely mundane in Koharu's world. They're somewhat mysterious, yes, but she literally lives with someone who'd job it is to uncover those mysteries.
That's like telling a country bumpkin that they're unbelievable for not wanting to see or explore the world past their small hometown where they've lived all their life. Some people are just content to not aspire to experience anything and everything, and that's perfectly fine.

I used to be a big fan of Ash x Dawn back in the day. But after so many years (And Serena) I've come to the realization that they won't get together and that's perfectly fine. Them being just best friends works really well just like with Yugi and Tea. As much as it sucks to say it, Dawn will most likely end up marrying Kenny anyway.

Probably would have been if not for the current series format and the remakes. I also think Misty/Brock's appearances back in SM were a "test" to see if people wanted to see old companions return again, and their first SM appearances were very popular which is why they got a second 2-parter, and now we're seeing that expand to most other characters coming back.

The appeals gradually looked better as they went on. The ones in BF look the same as DP contest appeals. Most of the appeals in the first half of Hoenn were nothing special, which is why the writers focused on battles more.

I never said she couldn't grow an interest for anything else in the future, and I never said her arc wasn't about learning to appreciate the world around her more. Since the magazine talk about executive wanting to bring back everybody but somehow ignoring the two characters that are just 10 minute away from Vermilion city.

Misty can drop by Sakuragi Lab anytime as long as she has a riding pokemon that can fly, she can also take the bus as well. Brock can take internship on Vermilion city pokemon center or a job on Sakuragi Lad since big cities has no need for a pokemon doctor due to pokemon center in the city.

What is the point of Kanto being Ash & Goh's homebase if Brock and Misty can not reappear freely?

Ash's current homebase is Kanto now, not other region. Vermilion city is only 10 or 15 minute away though bus.

She was showing Koharu about Sinnoh pokemon and laying in the grass, the same thing she always did in DP. Dawn's bed-head was a direct reference to DP, her getting snarky with Koharu later in the ep was the same way she acted toward Ash.

Just rewatched the ep with subs. Dawn wanted Koharu to have fun, to "stop and smell the roses" of Sinnoh rather than rushing to their destination. Dawn called Koharu a "spoilsport" and she was perfectly in character.

Also rewatching the ep with subs made me think the ep was paced better. First time around I was a bit annoyed that Dawn didn't appear until 11 minutes into the ep and wasted too much time showing Ash/Go or TR or Koharu alone, but it now feels better. Hopefully Dawn gets more screentime in the second part
