Transition generation, some parts of it were Proto-3d, it was the first gen to have constantly moving mons in battle, albeit as sprites, was the first gen to have a full fledged story with multiple supporting characters that also on their first journey. Strictly speaking it’s part of the older line, but it set the stage for the next 3 as gamefreak discovered what worked and what didn’t.

It depends on when you started pokemon. Everything is relative. If you are someone who played the original red and blue then BW is probably seen as modern.
Personally I started with HGSS so in my eyes gen 5 is classic. XY are close to being classics for me as well, those were the first games that I kept up with the hype. BW I kind of just begged my mom to buy when I saw it at the mall.

BW takes place sometime after GSC since it shows what happened to the last Team Rocket member and B2W2's postgame was intentionally made like a sendoff to the first 5 gens by having all the major non-player characters appear.

I would consider Gen 5 to be in its own era.
Gen 5 was Maauda’s attempt at creating a new game for a new audience. Entirely new Pokémon, takes place in a new region outside of Japan, and a much more mature cast and story to retain the aging audience. It was a good attempt at having a franchise evolve with its audience. Do you know what happened next? Sales were bad. Apparently people wanted the older Pokemon back. Masuda, in a bind, decided Kanto was the way to go which was why he made every game ever since a return to Kanto. I would not put BW with the classic era since it is a self contained story and a much darker, more character and narrative based, and more mature story. I would also not pit it with XY and everything else since the Kanto pandering and handholding did not start yet.
