So if they retconned animals to not exist in the Pokemon world (and all Pokemon are in effect animals) then why are the plants plants in the ecosystem? What makes a plant Pokemon different to a plant plant? Does the Pokemon world have germs, then? Are there microscopic germ Pokemon? Are viruses Pokemon? Is the Pokemon world on Earth? They go back and forth on this.

Can it use moves? It's a Pokemon. Humans can't learn moves, so they aren't Pokemon. Zygarde Cells are also stated to not be considered Pokemon because they can't use moves.

And no, it's not Earth. The Pokemon marketing manual and Masuda have both stated this.

The reason is simple: Plants and microscopic organisms have a different niches than Pokemon. They don't have to compete for resources like animals or microscopic organisms.

If animals ever existed in the world of Pokemon, they'd easily go extinct because they lack everything that makes a Pokemon-equivalent good.

I don't know why I wasted double dubs with such a shitty post, rereading it.
We know plankton exist but it seems like anything on a macro level would die out.
While there are Pokemon that are plant-like, they aren't in direct competition of plants.
For things like carnivorous plants, we never see their actual real-life counterparts because Victreebel and Carnivine both exist.

Plants don't fill the same narrative niche as Grass Pokemon, which are animals with plant themes (trees do not have faces and arms, and flowers don't have legs and shitty grins.) Having every single bush and grass blade and tree in the environment be a Pokemon would just make creating environments harder, with no real benefit.

They did.
As of LGPE, they've fully committed themselves to wiping all references to real world animals clean outside of species descriptors in the games, and the anime hasn't featured real world animals since OS.

While this is true (as if an for example a regular fish would be able to survive against a Gyarados for long) are germs hardy enough to survive Pokemon attacks?

Pokemon would refer to pretty much all sentient macrorganisms. I personally try to fit every pokemon into being a kind of animal.

There's a spectrum, IMO. Mammals and reptiles are big no-nos in the Pokémon world. Plants are obviously fair game.
What about fish? Or bugs? Are you telling me mosquitos don't exist in the Pokémon world and every single fly is Pokémon sized? How does that even work? Bugs are supposed to be small because they go around in small places and act as a swarm. I'd shit my pants if I saw a locust swarm with Kricketune sized grasshoppers.

Masuda didn't say Humans can't learn moves he said "Humans can't learn four different moves" which means they could learn more than just four different moves or less. We've seen humans teleport, use aura, and even use Psychic. Coco even uses a move in the movie! Being able to use or not use moves clearly doesn't make you or not make you a pokemon.

I think there's mention, or at least implied, that humans (or the genes of humans) were transplated by Arceus or some other god-like being and placed in the world, along with enough characteristics to allow humans to survive in that world.
