DP are a lowly 5th highest selling title next to two Mario games, one of which being the first new standard 2D Mario platformer in decades. The other two being brainage, which aimed at older adults, and the cumulative versions of Nintendogs, basically a toddlers game. DS sales inflated because it just plain targeted more people, as well as having a longer lifespan.
Add to that all the spin-off games which competed for money, as well as filtering younger kids who just wanted a Pokémon game but not a standard RPG.
