I am going to refute some common anti-Gen 2 arguments.
>The level curve is bad! Chuck, Jasmine and Pryce are too low levelled! The trainers barely give out any EXP, and the wild Pokémon are too weak!
Let me explain why this isn't actually a problem in Gen 2. This "problem" with the level curve almost completely disappears once you understand that difficulty is relative, and that the Gen 2 level curve was made slow intentionally. With other games, especially the new ones, you can expect to have a fully evolved starter by the 4th or 5th Gym. With Johto that's different. They wanted the level progression to be done in a way that evolutions are spread evenly throughout the game, rather than having a fully evolved team before the half way point. Your team evolves as they mirror the progression of the game. The low level trainers mean that you don't level over the Gym Leaders, and you can easily pick up Level 15-20 wild Pokémon before Jasmine and add them to your team straight away without having to grind them like in Gen 1 and 4. You also get the EXP Share after catching or defeating Red Gyarados, which you can do right after Morty, if you want to give your new additions a quick boost. After you unlock Route 44, you have plenty of opportunities to get your team prepared for Clair. You have:
>Route 44
>Ice Path
>Route 45+46
>Dragon's Den
>Blackthorn Gym
After all of this, you'd end up in the early to mid 30s, and with a bit of extra training you could have your team in the mid to late 30s. That's plenty high to go up against Clair, and with badge boosts you are basically on par with her at this point.
Then, you have Route 26 and 27 with all of the high levelled trainers (and their rematches!), to get to just under Level 40.
