Every type should get a gimmick, like how Rock types get a SpDef boost in sandstorm, grass types are immune to powder moves etc.

How about just make rock absorb spikes like poison absorbs toxic spikes. Think of it as the rock type crushing/breaking the spikes on the ground when it comes out.
