It was accepted because the trade off was hype, well animated battles that felt intense when you watched them, and they were consistent unlike SM which had some great battles and some rather meh ones.

But XY Ash is the most milquetoast Ash, acting more as an excuse for the plot to move than being interesting or fun in his own right.
