Well, if we go back to the prototype stages, it was named サイキング and was purple. But, there's been arguments that there was a female only Pokemon based on the Red Spider Lily that it's arguable it was also conceptualized as. Eventually, the design was developed into the Gardevoir we know, which was named サーナイト in the original Japanese. Now, this name is probably a pun on the phrase "Sir Knight" but also "さあ、ナイト" which means "come, knight" which if you want to stretch it does mean it's a coomer Pokemon. You can read the Pokedex entries for more of the vague knight theming, although a lot of that has gone more to Gallade lately.

It was released as サーナイト, and ナイト is technically meant as a male descriptor, but as we all know Pokemon tends to fudge a lot of that sort of thing. It was also released as a Pokemon with a 50/50 male/female gender ratio, in the unidentified egg group. I will say, it is absolutely a guardian, although personally I thought it was always kind of a weird looking alienboy but that might just be my perception of the official art and RS sprites.

It's name is based on Kirlian photography, it's classification is the emotion Pokemon, and it isn't mentioned dancing until FRLG. Furthermore, there are male ballerinas, although they tend to dress a bit differently, so if what you're saying is correct they probably just chose it based off popular perception, just like knights are a largely male concept despite the 50/50 male/female gender ratio of Gardevoir. I wouldn't have dismissed the prototypes if I were you, as between the genderless purple thing and the ostensibly female only spider lilly, that was your best argument for the conceptualization as a feminine Pokemon.

Wally's Gardevoir, the only one used by a trainer in its debut game and the most prominent example of a Gardevoir prior to Diantha's ace in gen 6, is locked male

By that same token, the remake changing him to a Gallade is another example of Gardevoir's guardian knight theming being cut from it

It's why I didn't bring it up in the first place, I'm not sure if I should be bringing up technical limitations as evidence, even if it's probably somewhat accurate especially with Wally's arc.

Can you give me some examples where it isn't the case? Maybe we can deduce a pattern. I'm sure there's an exception for female and male exclusive Pokemon, if that's what you mean. Pokemon with no known gender also falls into that category. I guess I should have clarified that, if they needed to call gender, they used a trainer's gender, but I felt that was a little to pedantic.

Reading it all, ultimately, there is no real point being made here beyond its name being サーナイト. Which, needless to say, actually means nothing. To begin with, knight, while historically a male title, is not associated with just males in modern culture and especially not so in Japan. This is assuming it even refers to a knight.

The design is, beyond the shadow of a doubt, feminine. More feminine than any design prior to it. This is undeniable. They knew exactly what they were doing with it. Even if you think it had some sort of a role of a knight-like protector, that's the same even now.
