>>477488741. Get rid of the whole "but what does it REALLY look like? Nobody knows~" thing because it doesn't work with such a simplistic design and it makes zero sense in-universe. Even in a world of electric mice and dead mom creatures, it's not remotely believable that nobody's ever seen the lower half of diglett or dugtrio, all diglett and dugtrio actively conceal their lower parts, and nobody's ever defeated a diglett/dugtrio and looked at the rest of its body. It doesn't work on other pokemon that pull this like Forretress, either. The only exception is Mimikyu since they actually gave an explanation why its true appearance is a mystery.
2. Either ditch the three-in-one thing or differentiate the three more, both visually and in descriptions. Dodrio managed to avoid this pitfall(pun intended) by splitting its emotions between the three heads, Exeggutor did something sort of similar, and Magneton didn't really avoid it at all. Maybe have each of the three send out different seismic waves and give them fault lines that look like tribal tattoos or something. The specifics don't matter as much as just doing something. I'd personally prefer ditching the three-in-one motif since there's already plenty of pokemon like that.
3. Make them actually look like an animal like a mole. You could incorporate the whack-a-mole motif somewhere like giving them stubby arms that look like a whack-a-mole and in Soviet Russia mole whacks you rapidly instead or something. This includes basic animal features like a mouth because how do Diglett and Dugtrio eat with no orifice on the face that the food apparently goes in.
Also give it a regional variant that isn't abysmal trash.
