Real Kantochads don't care about starters: They're all mediocre especially in their beginning generation
Why would I want a Blastoise when I can have a Gyarados, Slowbro, Starmie or Cloyster?
Fire Types aren't particularly desirable, but even if I wanted one, why not go for Moltres instead, maybe even Arcanine?
Same for Grass Types and Venusaur is arguably the least directly outclassed but that's mostly because the competition, and even then in Gen 1, I'd prefer Victreebel.

I was under the impression it was an accepted thing that first gen the starters are a pseudo difficulty setting with charmander being hardest squirtle being medium and bulbasaur being easy

OG Blastoise was so broken
The reason Charizard was given 120 HP was so that the players could actually use that thing and maybe kill 1 boss monster, back then Energy Removal and Super Energy removal just killed those kinds of plays dead

Seriously, that's potentially 8 cards in a game where drawing your entire deck was not an impossible ocurrence (Pokemon has always been more about deck composition and turn-by-turn gameplay, rather than about having issues with resources)

I actually think that they handled it masterfully back then (back when Wizards had smart design ideas)
