I don't understand what people mean when they complain that Johto has a "bad level curve." Does it mean you spend the most of the game with your Pokemon being overleveled and one shotting shitmons? Because literally every game is guilty of that.

The opposite. You aren't overleveled, the wild Pokemon and trainers are severely underleveled.

Not really, most pokemon games gen 3-5 have fairly solid level curves, especially something like platinum or BW2, which have marvelously balanced level curves. That doesn't make them not easy but it DOES make them harder than the sheer steam rolling that is GSC after getting 4 badges

The Champion's highest-leveled Pokemon is only level 50.

Post-game, this also means there's nowhere to grind; you aren't getting much EXP since everything is so weak. Getting to level 100 takes ages.

The wild pokemon and trainers are severely under the level curve, but the GYM LEADERS aren't, and are even sometimes a step above. But that doesn't make it any less of a slog to have mow down the regular trainers, who are far more numerous.
Something about the gen 1-2 design philosophy necessitated the trainers to be way lower leveled than you after the half way point, since both gens have the same problem, it's just more apparent in johto

Interesting that you will admit you're underleveled only AFTER you decide that that doesn't matter. You wouldn't need the other methods of getting stronger if the game was just well designed so you were able to level up like every other one in the series.

You don't need to do that tho, just use type advantages and have good team synergy.
I managed to beat him with pokemon UNDER level 50 because I used meganium to set up duel screens so that my girafarig could survive long enough to Baton pass a few agilities to My poliwrath, who then proceeds to use hypnosis, then while the pokemon is asleep, use belly drum, then sweep with Body slam. Like hell man, just use actual strategy and you can overcome any amount of power

Where all the regions are close together and Johto sticks out like a sore thumb where it’s extremely low and has a weird ass dip on the 7th gym and a massive bump at the 8th gym and e4. I just finished Crystal a couple of hours ago. The bad level curve is being at a higher level than everything once you beat your fifth gym and then being severely underleveled for the Elite 4. It’s not a game ruining experience since grinding in a handheld RPG is super easy, but it’s definitely the worst part of Johto.

5th, 6th and 7th gym has the same level range because people might just go right at ecruteak city the first time and thus pryce will be the 5th gym. Just like how koga and sabrina has similar level because people usually fight sabrina as 5th.

Literally why would you grind? Raising a full team in BW2 means you are always underleveled. But that was intentional because of how exp works in gen 5.

The problem is the level curve is flat. The enemies you are fighting go up at a snails pace meaning that you're not evolving pokemon or learning new moves rapidly and since wild pokemon are even more underleveled than the trainers grinding up new replacement party members to keep things interesting takes a way too long. Effectively you're incentivized to use only a few Pokemon to beat a few higher level boss fights which will still be easy if you don't rotate or have a challenge run.
